Beginner’s MMA Gear Guide

Beginner’s MMA Gear Guide

Starting MMA training is exciting, but stepping into the gym without the right gear can be a painful mistake. Whether you’re focused on striking, grappling, or a mix of both, having the proper equipment helps you train safely and improve faster.

This beginner-friendly guide covers all the essential MMA gear you need.

MMA Gloves

You’ll need two types of gloves:

  • Sparring Gloves (6–10 oz): More padding for partner work
  • MMA Grappling Gloves (4 oz): Open-finger gloves for bag work and drills

Shin Guards

Shin guards protect your legs during kicks, checks, and drills. Choose high-quality models from Fairtex, Twins, or Top King for beginner-level protection and comfort.

Ankle Supports

Not required, but many beginners use ankle wraps for extra joint support during kick-heavy drills. They also reduce mat burns and help grip.

Hand Wraps

Use hand wraps under your gloves to stabilise your wrists and protect your knuckles during impact. Beginners often overlook this, but it’s one of the most important safety measures.

Mouth Guard

Protect your teeth and jaw, even in light sparring. A boil-and-bite mouthguard is fine to start, but you can also go custom-fit later.

Shorts or Spats

Avoid loose gym shorts. MMA shorts or compression leggings keep you mobile and safe during groundwork.

Optional: Groin Guard & Rash Guard

These aren’t mandatory in all gyms but are strongly recommended if you’re sparring. Rash guards also help prevent mat burns and skin infections.

Final Tip: Quality Over Quantity

Start with reliable gear that will protect you and last beyond a few sessions. Fairtex, Twins, and Top King are trusted by fighters worldwide, perfect for beginners aiming to train seriously.
